Orpheus and Euridice - Nicolas Poussin
Orpheus is from ancient Greek religion and myth, and the one he loved was Euridice.  The story goes that during their wedding night, Euridice steps on a snake, thus killing her.  Orpheus wanting her back goes to the underworld and plays his music to persuade Pluto.  Pluto, of course, is touched by his music and sheds tears of iron; therefore, allows Orpheus to reunite with his lover Euridice, but he mustn’t look at her until he leaves the underworld.  Sadly, out of over anticipation, Orpheus turns around right before he reaches the surface and Euridice’s spirit fades back into the darkness..never to be seen again.
